Chapter 5
When I arrived at the hospital, I followed the nurse to begin the pre–surgery preparations.
I didn’t expect to see Gavin there.
He was wearing his white doctor’s coat, followed by a group of interns.
“Dr. Hendrix is so handsome!”
“I heard he’s here to guide the cardiology department today.”
“His wife is so lucky to see such a gorgeous husband every day.”
“If Dr. Hendrix were my husband, even if he made a mistake, I’d slap myself instead of blaming him!”
One of the nurses glanced at me and then asked,
“Ms. Clark, are you sure you want us to call your family only after the procedure?”
I nodded.
She glanced down at the form in her hand again.
“Patient’s family… Gavin Hendrix? Gavin Hendrix!”
“Your husband’s name is Gavin Hendrix?”
“Isn’t that the same as Dr. Hendrix?”
I shook my head, my gaze fixed on Gavin as he walked away, and replied calmly,
“It’s him.”
The nurse gasped, covering her mouth in disbelief.
I ignored her stunned reaction and reminded her again.
“Please notify Gavin only after the procedure is done.”
The nurse nodded and walked away.
As I waited for the surgery, I began organizing all the conversations and evidence of Nicole’s interactions with me.
I even packaged all the videos Nicole had sent me.
Once everything was sorted, I forwarded them to Gavin’s email.
I didn’t know when he would see them, but I knew Nicole’s plans were about to fall apart.
After waiting a few minutes, the nurse wheeled me into the operating room.
The room was freezing, so cold that I couldn’t stop trembling.
In a daze, memories from college flooded back.
Our school had sent us to a rural area to gather information, but we encountered a mudslide.
I was trapped in a car for an entire day and night, and everyone thought I was dead.
Only Gavin refused to give up.
I remembered that day vividly–torrential rain pouring down, and Gavin appearing in front of ine when I was on the brink of death.

Chapter 5
He held me tightly, his heartbeat louder than the thunder.
“Hannah, I can never lose you,” he had said.
When I opened my eyes again, Gavin was standing before me, just like back then.
His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was hoarse as he asked,
“Hannah, why?*
I knew Gavin hadn’t checked the things I sent him.
If he had, how could he shamelessly ask me why?
So I answered bluntly,
“Gavin, was cheating fun?”
He froze, his gaze trembling before his arms fell limply to his sides.
“Sweetheart… Hannah, let me explain,” he pleaded.
“I don’t love Nicole. She was just a momentary distraction. The person I truly love has always been you.”
Cheating, yet still speaking of love.
I laughed bitterly, the motion pulling at my stomach and causing a sharp pain.
“Gavin, your so–called love is cheap and disgusting!”
My words struck him hard. He staggered, and for the first time, I noticed the wound on his left hand.
“The thing is, Dr. Hendrix went crazy when he got the call and rushed straight to the OR,” the nurse said hesitantly, looking between us.
“He cut his hand with a scalpel. We told him to get it treated, but he wouldn’t…”
Gavin’s profession as a surgeon made the importance of his hands undeniable.
Yet here he was, letting his hand bleed freely, his white coat stained with dark patches of blood.
But all I could picture was Nicole wearing that same white coat, sitting on his lap.
“Gavin, let’s get a divorce!”
I said it calmly, then closed my eyes.
“I need to rest. Anyone irrelevant, please leave.”
Gavin leaned against the wall, his eyes cast downward.
After a few seconds, he lifted his head.
“Sweetheart, you just had surgery; you need to rest,”
“I’ll make something to help you recover. Just focus on resting.”
He avoided mentioning divorce altogether.
But I showed no mercy in tearing through his pretense.
“Gavin, I said I want a divorce. Didn’t you understand?”
“Or do you think I’m so stupid, so naive, that a few words from you can make me overlook your infidelity?”
1 fixed my gaze on him and spoke each word with precision.
Chapter S
“Sweetheart. that’s not what I meant,” he said, flustered.
“Nicole and I… it was just a physical thing. She’s nothing more than an outlet for my desires. The one I love is you.”
An outlet for his desires?
Can love and sex really be separated so neatly?
During all those nights he spent with Nicole, was there truly never a inoment when he loved her?
Besides, why would I ever want a man who has been tainted?
“Gavin, you disgust me!” I spat.
“Why don’t you check what I sent to your email?”
“Every filthy thing you did with Nicole–I see it every time I close my eyes. Gavin, you’re revolting!”
I pointed toward the door, issuing my ultimatum.
“Get out!”
I used every ounce of strength in my body to shout those words.
