Chapter 6
The sound of paper slamming on the table echoed like thunder.
Everyone froze. Eyes widened. Time stood still.
For two seconds, the banquet hall was dead silent.
Then Ricky stepped forward with feigned shock, voice full of affected concern. “Bryan, Serena asked you to bring Thomas.. What’s the meaning of this? You’re bringing a death certificate instead?”
“Even if you’re angry, cursing your own son at the Portman Group’s anniversary celebration–isn’t that going too far?”
Gasps rippled through the room.
The expressions of the high–ranking guests twisted into disgust.
“How could he curse his own child like this?”
“These lower–class people have no sense, no education–just empty pride and a hunger for attention.”
“All for a bit of self–respect, they’ll do anything… even disgrace the dead!”
“Thomas is truly unfortunate to have been raised by such a deranged, uncivilized father.”
“Letting a man like this marry into a prestigious family–it’s shameful.”
One by one, they stepped away from me, recoiling as though I were diseased.
Serena’s mother clutched her chest, breathing rapidly, then pointed a trembling finger at me and shrieked, “Bryan, how dare you go this far!”
“Where is my grandson?! Tell me where he is!”
I looked at her coldly, then pointed to the certificate.
‘I told you,” I said, voice like steel. “He’s passed away.”
‘You-!” Serena’s face contorted with rage. “Bryan, enough with this act!”
‘You’ve really lost your mind, haven’t you?”
‘I must’ve spoiled you all these years–now you think you can say anything, make up any absurd story!”
‘You’ve crossed the line!”
looked Serena in the eye and said quietly, yet firmly,
Whether you believe me or not, you can find out the truth yourself.”
Without hesitation, she pulled out her phone and called the butler. Her voice was sharp and commanding.
Find my son–immediately! No matter what it takes, bring him back!”
After hanging up, she turned to me, her expression icy cold.
Bryan, don’t think I’ll fall for your pathetic tricks. The moment I find him, you’ll pay for this stunt. And after that, you’ll never lay eyes on him again.”

Her voice was full of threat, her eyes burning with fury.
But I remained calm.
“Serena, the one who should pay the price… is you.”
At that, the room erupted in laughter.
The well–dressed business elites scoffed at me with contempt.
“This guy’s completely lost it. A powerless, low–class son–in–law dares to talk back to Ms.
Portman?”
“Ridiculous. If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t even qualify to attend a banquet like this–now he’s out here making threats?”
“First he curses his own son with a paper of death certificate, now he’s trying to act noble? This is exactly the kind of delusion you get from the lower classes.”
All eyes turned on me–mocking, disdainful, as if I were nothing more than a street performer craving attention.
Serena gave me one last look, eyes brimming with scorn.
“Bryan, marrying you is the greatest embarrassment of my life.
But before the sneers could deepen, her phone rang again..
She glanced at the screen, saw it was the butler and–with a smug flick of her thumb–put it on speaker for the entire room to hear.
The room quieted instantly.
The butler’s trembling voice filled the air, “Ms. Portman.. after a thorough investigation, I’ve confirmed something terrible. The young master–he died… the same day you sent him to the college entrance exam.”
The entire hall went still.
Faces turned pale.
Serena’s expression froze. “What… what are you saying?”
“There must be a mistake.”
But the butler’s voice grew firmer.
‘I verified it multiple times. That day… you dropped him off halfway to the exam hall. He couldn’t get a taxi, so he ran the rest of the way on foot. He was hit by a truck and died instantly.”
His words struck like thunder, each one heavier than the last.
Serena’s hand trembled as she ended the call.
No one spoke.
The silence was deafening.
Serena’s mother clutched her chest and stared at the certificate beside me, her voice barely more than a whisper.
“Is it true… is my grandson really gone?”
But Serena didn’t answer.

She just stood there–rigid, pale, her lips tightly pressed together.
Then, out of nowhere, Ricky suddenly cried out with exaggerated grief.
“Serena! I’m sorry–it’s all my fault!”
“If I hadn’t gotten you pregnant… you wouldn’t have had to go to the hospital that day for your morning sickness… and you wouldn’t have left your son alone…”
“I killed him! I have to go apologize to him–right now!”
He lunged toward the door dramatically, but Serena quickly grabbed him, pulling him back intc her arms.
“Don’t go,” she whispered, holding him tight. “It’s not your fault.”
“This… this was Thomas’s fate.”
“I was going to announce him as the heir to the Portman Group today. But now… maybe this was
meant to be.”
“Why else would he die on the exact day I found out I was pregnant with your child?”
Tears glistened in her eyes–but her voice grew calm and resolute.
“This is heaven’s will.”
“Our child… your and my child… he’s the one destined to inherit the Portman Group.”
“Thomas’s death… was to make way for him.”
