Chapter 5
The plane landed in chilly Eiskald.
I bundled up and saw Maren waving wildly. She hugged me tightly. “Congrats on leaving the past.”
I playfully punched her shoulder, but her expression turned serious.
“Come on. We’ve got tons to do,” she said. “By the way, this is your assistant, Cassian
Drew.”
She introduced me to a guy following us. We greeted each other, and Maren dragged me to
work.
From then on, I was swamped.
At eleven, I dragged my tired body back to my rented house. At eight the next morning, I set out to work. The intense mode went on for a week, and our startup launched smoothly.
At the opening, I was both exhausted and thrilled.
With Gideon, I’d had no time for myself, let alone for my dreams.
Meanwhile, Gideon faced a different scene.
A week earlier, after I hung up, he felt uneasy and tried calling again.
Vesper urged him to go to the ceremony and pulled him away. He had to put away his
phone.
Afterward, she wanted to travel.
Her face, so like that of his first love, compelled him to agree. They flew abroad, and he
came home a week later.

He habitually called out to me, but there was no answer. He tried again, still getting nothing.
His unease grew as he recalled my recent attitude toward him. He called me, but only a
robotic voice answered him.
When the butler returned, he asked anxiously, “Where is Selene?”
The butler hesitated. “Mrs. Strathmore left with a suitcase a week
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Gideon huffed.
“I was unable to reach you,” the butler stammered.

He agreed, leaving work to his assistant. Consequently, he missed the news about me.
Furious, he snapped, “Selene, don’t you dare come back! Without me, where can you go?”
After a shower, he went to his study.
Two files sat on the desk. The top was our contract.
He paused, not recalling the matter until he opened it. “No way. I forgot?”
Under it was my signed divorce agreement.
He stared, then tore them up. “This is invalid. I didn’t say we were
done!”
