Chapter 6
Gideon saw the contract’s end date and associated it with the changes in my
attitude.

He couldn’t believe my care for him was only because of the contract.
“No. You don’t leave without my say–so,” he muttered, ordering his assistant to track me
down.
Far away in Eiskald, I had no clue about his situation.
At that moment, I was discussing product data with Cassian.

Out of work for so long, I struggled at first, but the discomfort was dulled by the fast pace.
Recently, we landed a skincare project. Cassian and I led the team, working late.
As we finalized the results, my phone rang.
It was a servant and one of the few who knew about my leave.
He mentioned Gideon’s recent grumpiness at home. The chef’s food didn’t suit him, and the staff trod carefully every day, afraid of his outbursts.
He had sent people to look for me. When they failed, he gave up and let Vesper move in.
I wasn’t surprised by the news at all. Gideon looked for me only because my leaving bruised his ego. After some time, it didn’t matter.
I brushed it off.
The servant hung up and saw Gideon hovering nearby.
“I…” he tried to explain.
Gideon cut him off. “You can reach Selene?”

The servant nodded under the pressure, and Gideon ordered, “Call her again.”
Seeing the same number, I was puzzled but answered, “Anything else?”
Gideon’s voice came through. “Where are you?”
I paused. “What do you want?”
He repeated, “Where are you?”
My patience ran out. “I’m hanging up.”
“You sure you’re not coming back?” he pressed.
I laughed, “Why would I? The contract is done.”
He went quiet. “I can pay more. Say ten million dollars?”

“You see, we’re not from the same world. Don’t call me again,” I said indifferently.
He upped the ante. “20 million.”
“I’ve lost eight years. I’m done living for you,” I snorted.

My refusals pissed him off. He spluttered, “Don’t push your luck. I’m asking one last time.
Do you…”
“I’m not going back,” I cut him off, hanging up.
He was stunned, then smashed his phone and stormed off.
In his study, he called his assistant. “Plan my wedding with Vesper.”
He believed I would be jealous and came crawling back, but he forgot I had left on his
engagement day.
