Chapter 9
I raised an eyebrow. “Why should I? We’re done.”
Gideon opened his mouth, but a voice cut in, “Selene? You’re still here. Wanna grab
dinner?”
Cassian walked up and saw Gideon. “Who’s this?”
Gideon looked hopeful, but I said flatly, “My ex–husband. Cheated with a ton of women.”
Cassian had heard things about Gideon from Maren. He snorted, “What now? Crawling
back for a second chance?”
Gideon’s face fell at the sarcasm. “This is between me and Selene. Butt out.”
I ignored him and turned to Cassian. “Where are we going to eat? Maren is out tonight.”
Cassian thought for a moment. “How about sashimi platters?”

Gideon called after me with a broken voice, but I didn’t look back.

His earnestness amused me.
I didn’t expect Gideon, so full of pride, to keep haunting me.

He gazed at me and spoke softly. “I’m not giving up. I’ll be here till you change your mind.”
“Don’t you get it? The contract is over, and we are done,” I snapped.

For the next few days, he kept showing up. His self–absorbed persistence finally annoyed
- me.
Then his company was reported for tax evasion charges. He had to go back for questioning.
The next day, a friend told me the story.
While Gideon was away, Vesper gathered evidence and reported on him. The investigation found massive fraud, and Gideon was arrested.
My divorce case then sailed through.

Holding the decree, I felt lighter than ever. Even the air smelled fresher.
In jail, Gideon requested to see me. I refused without hesitation.
Someone like him wasn’t worth my time.
One day, Maren burst in, ecstatic. “Good news! The biggest cosmetics company wants to work with us. They love your tech and want a long–term deal.”
I paused, then smiled.
Surely, ditching the wrong person made my life better.
