Chapter 9
“Yeah, you never really had anything against me, so why are you acting like this? All of a man?”
Cecelia’s voice turned nasty. “He was mine to begin with! If it weren’t for you, he would’ve waited for me forever!
“You probably don’t even know this. His phone password is my birthday. The rings he wears? I have a matching one. There’s so much about us you don’t have a clue about…”
Hearing her brag, I did not feel anything at all.
I just asked calmly, “Then why did he send you to jail?”
She went quiet for a second and suddenly started screaming.
“It’s all your fault, you nasty woman!”
When she realized I was not budging, Cecelia completely lost it.
“You skank! If you hadn’t meddled, he never would’ve done this to me! You’ll get what’s coming to you! I swear…”
I hung up before she could finish her screaming.
A month later, I made up my mind about something else.
I wanted to go to grad school and keep studying.
My current job was good, but there was not much room to grow. I wanted a bigger stage.

My coworker was really sweet about it, too. She even introduced me to

Bor’s little brother, who was doing his PhD.
She said I
could ask him anything about applying.
I was so happy. After following Simon Neffi on social media, I found out his university was exactly where I wanted to go.
He sent me some inside info and tips about the school’s research focus.
I noted everything down carefully.
I told him, “If I pass the exam, I’ll definitely thank you in person.”
He replied super simply, but it was enough to keep me going. “I’ll be waiting.”
After that, my days were all about work and studying.
When there were only three months left before the exam, I quit my job to go all in.
I threw myself completely into studying for the exam.
Because I worked so hard, I just felt relieved and satisfied when I walked
exam hall that day.

However, that feeling vanished the moment I saw Luca standing by the door.
We had not seen each other for over half a year. He looked the same as always, but colder somehow.
When I tried to walk past him, Luca grabbed my arm.
“Don’t you recognize me? Not even gonna say hi?”

I pulled my arm away and asked flatly, “What are you doing here?”
“I came to congratulate you on finishing your exams.
I nodded, said thanks, and kept walking.
Luca looked stunned and obviously annoyed.
“Genevieve, are you really gonna ignore me like this?”
I did not even look back. “Didn’t I just say hi?”
“That’s how you greet people?”
Luca sighed and said like he was helpless, “I stayed away for so long because I knew you had to study. Don’t overthink it.”
There was nothing to overthink. Honestly, I would rather he just stayed away for good.
“How’d the exam go?”
“What are you doing here?”
We spoke at the same time.
“What? I can’t come to see you?”
He looked straight at me, eyes dark like he wanted to drill a hole through
- me.
I met his eyes and said calmly, “Yeah, don’t come.
“Why is he here? It’s pointless,” I thought to myself.
I turned and left without waiting for him to say anything. That alone said everything I needed to say.

Chapter 9
After all these years, he should understand what that means.
He was acting like he did not get it, when deep down, he knew exactly what was going on.
Luca felt awful. He had not shown up for half a year, and I thought I would be longing for him.
Yet, in reality..
