“Here’s the deposit we agreed on,” Joanna said. “Once the job’s done, you’ll get the rest, every last cent.”
In a secluded corner of the village, Joanna handed a case of foreign currency to the taciturn man facing her.
Without a word, the man flipped open the case and briefly checked the authenticity of the banknotes.
Joanna continued coldly, “Tomorrow, Sylvia will attend her daughter’s parent–teacher conference at Francisco Memorial School. Wait outside her house tonight. Make your move while she’s on the road tomorrow.”
The man flashed an OK sign, took the money case, and turned to leave.
Warily scanning her surroundings, Joanna quickly got into her car and sped away.
Freddy Colon returned home, only to find that his mother still hadn’t come back from the vegetable patch near the village entrance.
Freddy frowned as he stepped out of the house, heading toward the vegetable patch. Just then, his burner phone suddenly rang
“Hello, is this Freddy?” came an unfamiliar voice from the other end of the line.
“Who is this? How did you get my number?” Freddy demanded, instantly on high alert.
A
“Don’t get me wrong. Your mom gave me this number. She was just hit by a car on the roadside, and I took her to the hospital,” she said.
At that moment, Sylvia stood in a county hospital ward. On the bed lay none other than Freddy’s mother.
“Mom’s in the hospital? Hit by a car?” Freddy’s voice tightened. “How bad is it?”
“Freddy, it’s me,” Casey Colon said as she took Sylvia’s phone. Her leg was in a cast and she couldn’t put any weight on it. “I’m fine. I just took a little tumble. Don’t worry. Thanks to this kind young lady for bringing me to the hospital.”
Freddy felt some tension ease from his shoulders. “Hand her the phone,” he said.
Casey handed the phone back to Sylvia.
Sylvia said into the phone, “When can you get here? Your mom can’t get out of bed right now. She really needs someone to look after her.”
Freddy, itching to get to the city to tail Sylvia and look for the perfect moment to strike, said hurriedly, “Miss, could you do me a favor and hire a caregiver for my mom? I’ve got something urgent to take care of today, so I can’t make it.”
“What could possibly be more important than your mother?” Sylvia asked, her voice laced with disapproval.
She had no idea that the man she was talking to on the phone was the very motorcyclist who intended to kill her.
Freddy felt a wave of bitterness wash over him. He’d already given his word to Joanna and taken her deposit, and things had reached a point where he couldn’t change anything.
“Could I get your contact info? I’ll wire you the money for the medical bills and the caregiver’s fee right away,” he said.
“No need,” Sylvia said coldly, then hung up. She immediately called her assistant. “Jolie, go stay with Ruby tonight. I won’t be coming home.”
“Sure thing, Ms. Sullivan.” With the confirmation, Sylvia felt some tension ease. She turned to Casey and said, “Your son has some urgent m can’t make it tonight, but don’t worry. I’ll stay with you.”

“Thank you, Ms. Sullivan,” Casey choked out, gratefully gripping Sylvia’s hand from her hospital bed. “My fractured leg is already in a cast. If it’s not too much trouble, would you mind taking me home? I can recover just fine there–”

Realizing that Sylvia might not have returned home last night, and since he couldn’t intercept her at her place, Freddy rode his motorcycl near Francisco Memorial School.
This was the only route to Francisco Memorial School. Sylvia would have to pass this way for the parent teacher conference.
Like a predator in the shadows, he kept his gaze locked on the road ahead.
A little after nine, his eyes lit up. There it was, Sylvia’s Porsche, the license plate a perfect match.
He was just about to shift gears and ram into her for a deadly crash, when suddenly, Sylvia’s car swerved and pulled over to the roadside
“Ms. Sullivan, could you help me out? I need to buy something,” Casey said from the passenger seat.
“What do you need, Mrs. Colon? Let me get it for you,” Sylvia said.
“Ms. Sullivan, I’d better go myself,” Casey said with a smile.
Casey still had some change on her. Since she was heading to Ruby’s parent–teacher conference, she thought, ‘I should pick up some snacks for the little

‘If it weren’t for Sylvia, I’d have been lying on the road last night–maybe even run over by a car.
Unaware of what Casey was thinking, Sylvia got out, went around to the passenger side, and gently helped her out, making sure not to jostle her injured leg.
Not far away, Freddy narrowed his eyes. “This is my chance,‘ he thought. All he had to do was gun his motorcycle forward and he could ram into Sylvía, sending her flying.
Just as Freddy was about to make his move, his eyes widened in shock. Sylvia was helping his mother out of the car.
He froze and wondered, ‘What the hell? Why is Mom with Sylvia? Wait? Could it be A startling suspicion crept into Freddy’s mind.
Without a second thought, Freddy killed his motorcycle’s engine and rushed over.
