Rolling her eyes, she attempted to slam the door shut. Dante hastily reached out to stop her, groaning in pain when the door smacked right against his hand. His eyes watered from the pain, but he gritted his teeth and insisted, “Tell me where she went.”
Scoffing, Linda replied, “You got another woman pregnant, but now it finally occurred to you to look for Nina? Don’t be so shameless, Dante.”
“Isobel has myeloma,” Dante explained solemnly. “She saved my life. I’m just trying to help her fulfill her wish to have a baby before she dies .. There’s nothing more to it.”
…
“She saved your life?” Linda repeated, sneering again. Her gaze was sharp as she snapped, “Get your facts straight! Nina’s the one who saved your life!”
Dante was dumbstruck. “What did you say?“!
Linda snorted and whipped out a photo from five years ago. It showed me being wheeled into an operating room. My face was ghostly pale, and my abdomen was covered in blood.
“Five years ago, on the streets of Chargo, it was her who truly saved you.
“She took a bullet that night—barely made it out alive. And yet, you assumed Isobel saved your life just because you saw her first when you woke up? Hah!”
This revelation completely shattered Dante.
He clearly recalled he’d been attacked back then. The last thing he remembered was seeing a silhouette lunge forward to save him. When he
woke up, he saw Isobel sitting beside his bed.
Dante had never considered the possibility that someone else had saved
“Nina never brought it up because she didn’t want you to feel like you owed her. She certainly didn’t want to use this incident to bind you to her,” Linda said, her eyes red with emotion. “But what did you do? You credited someone else for saving you, and you even used your semen to thank her. How disgusting.”
As if he had been struck by lightning, Dante stumbled off.
When Dante went looking for Isobel, she stood up in surprise and asked, “Dante? What’s going on with you?”
“Save it,” he said grimly. Eyes blazing, he questioned, “I just have one question for you. Are you really the one who saved my life back then?”
Isobel’s expression stiffened. Her eyes flashed with panic, but she quickly composed herself and said, “It was me, of course. I was the first one you saw when you woke up, wasn’t I?”
Dante continued to stare at Isobel, but his gaze slowly turned cold. He wasn’t going to believe her anymore.
