Chapter 8
In the end, all the tomb raiders were caught, and Marcus was rushed to the hospital just in time.
He’d been shot in the back–because I had pushed him out of the
way.
A few days later, I took Jayla with me to the city hospital to visit him after he’d come out of surgery.
His chest was wrapped in bandages, and when he saw me, a flash of light flickered in his eyes before quickly dimming.
I arranged the flowers in the vase and said softly, “Aaron has been taken in by his grandmother. Summer vacation will be over
soon.”
Marcus nodded slightly.
I glanced at Jayla, who was waiting obediently by the door, then hesitated before continuing, “I’m going to take Jayla and leave this place. I’ll send her to school in a big city. I don’t want her to have any connection with your family. Once you recover, let’s get
divorced.”
Marcus was clearly struggling to accept this, his eyes immediately welling up with tears.
I suddenly realized I could barely remember what the old

Marcus looked like–the one who used to get drunk and race cars over Sienna.
His voice carried a note of desperation: “So there’s really no chance for us to get back together?”
I was quiet for a moment, then nodded gently.
Marcus looked like he’d been sentenced to death. He suddenly closed his eyes, his chest rising and falling involuntarily as he let out a low sob.
Te was crying.
Tears streamed down his gaunt cheeks.
Through his sobs, he apologized: “I never wanted to divorce you. Aubrey, I stopped caring about Sienna a long time ago. It’s just that I liked her for ten years, and I couldn’t accept being rejected by her, so I kept unconsciously choosing her.
“But I never meant to hurt you. As for Aaron causing your miscarriage, I’ve already punished him privately. During those days you were in the hospital, I made him kneel for an entire afternoon. That’s why he was deliberately defying you. It was my fault.”
He was offering apologies that were three years too late, but I no longer needed them.

“The day I heard about your plane crash, I was terrified. I never imagined I could lose you. Fortunately, after searching for three whole years, I finally found news of you. But I never expected that you’d really decided to never want Aaron and me again…” As he spoke, Marcus completely lost control and broke down sobbing.
I stood up helplessly amid his devastating cries and walked toward Jayla, who was watching curiously.
I crouched down and said, “Come on, let me take you to get something delicious.”
Jayla cheered and took my hand, skipping away happily.
Half a month later, Marcus was discharged from the hospital.
He came to the city where Jayla and I had settled and officially went through the divorce proceedings with me.
Besides giving me a house and a car, he also transferred an additional eighty million dollars to me.
I accepted it all.
After all, I needed that money to raise Jayla.
In the future, I want to raise Jayla to be optimistic and cheerful, not like I used to be–insecure and introverted when it came to relationships.
