Aron’s parents were initially reluctant to break off the engagement, but after Aron spoke with them privately, their attitude became more accommodating.
“Since you two don’t care for each other, let’s call off the engagement.”
Aron’s mother’s demeanor toward us
didn’t change much. She smiled warmly at my parents and said:
“It’s truly a shame we won’t be becoming one family this time. I hope our families
will have the opportunity to grow closer in the future.”
Just polite pleasantries. Both sides
maintained a cordial attitude regarding their business cooperation.

Breaking off an engagement is actually quite simple. Both parties reach an agreement, then inform friends and family.

On the first night after calling off the engagement, I received a call from Jacob.
“Miss Ryan, I hear you’re single now?”
“Yeah, what’s it to you?”
Jacob chuckled softly: “Of course it matters to me. Now that you’re single, I intend to pursue becoming your boyfriend.”
“Once you’ve sorted out your family affairs, come have dinner with me.” His voice dropped slightly, “We haven’t dined together in ages. I miss you.”

Jacob used to be so arrogant, but now he was actually being flirtatious with me.
I hung up.
Three days later, the paternity test results came in.
We decided to go to the testing facility in person to collect the physical report and reveal the answer on the spot.
All parties involved needed to be present.
My parents and I came, along with Jade and Joy.
For some reason, Aron tagged along too, as if to provide moral support for Joy.

I didn’t care though.

My parents and Jade were all on edge, as if that test report was destined to shatter our family’s peace and harmony.
When the test results were handed to me,
everyone’s eyes were fixed on me.
I looked at Joy and said calmly: “Joy, this is a paternity test report issued by a judicial identification institution, so it can’t be falsified. You understand that, right?”
Joy didn’t understand why I was saying this, but she nodded anyway: “I understand.”
“Jessie, quit the small talk. Just announce the results already!” Aron urged

Clearly, he was eager to join the Ryan family.

Just as I was about to open the report, a disheveled middle–aged woman suddenly burst in. After scanning the room, her gaze immediately locked onto Joy. She screamed and lunged forward to attack
Joy.
“You ungrateful bitch! You abandoned us to go find other people to be your parents?”
The woman slapped Joy right across the face. Joy covered her cheek and screamed. When she tried to hit Joy a second time,
Aron intervened.
He frowned and said sternly: “Who are you? How dare you hit someone?” 5/7

features sharp with undisguised malice: “I’m her mother, Rose Lancaster!”
“You’re that human trafficker?” Aron
realized.
My parents also stepped forward to restrain Rose. Regardless, the results hadn’t been revealed yet.
“Joy, you’re coming home with me right now. Have you had enough of this fantasy? You want to get rich overnight, is that it?” Rose spoke harshly, “You’d be better off marrying that man your father picked out for you. His family owns a factory!”
My parents looked at Rose, seemingly trying to recall if they’d ever had any
contact with such a person. But searching

shook their heads at me.
They didn’t know Rose.
Which meant Rose couldn’t possibly be seeking revenge against my parents.

I studied Rose. Twenty years had passed. Even twenty years ago, I hadn’t gotten a clear look at her face. I couldn’t even
remember her build, so this woman was a
stranger to me as well.
But I suddenly understood. So this was what the person who had nearly changed Jade’s fate–and my entire family’s destiny–looked like.
