Aron wasn’t such a petty person before.
I looked at him calmly, pressing down on Jade’s arm to stop her from speaking.
I said quietly, “Aron, do you need Jade to apologize for slapping you over your affair?”
Before Aron could respond, the girl beside him looked at me timidly.
“Jessie, Aron and I aren’t like that. Please
don’t misunderstand.”
Hearing her call my name, Jade
immediately flared
up with anger.
I pointed to Jade, who was fuming beside

Aron finally spoke up triumphantly, “Jessie, how long are you going to keep treating this impostor as your sister? Didn’t your parents tell you? Jade isn’t your real sister–she is!”

He pointed to the girl beside him, the one he’d been acting so intimate with.
I paused, my gaze falling on Aron and the girl next to him, studying them with fresh eyes. I had a vague idea of who this girl might be.
Before I could speak, Jade jumped in first.
“What are you talking about? Cheating and now making up stories? She’s Jessie’s real sister?”
In a warm, peaceful family, no one would

absurdly suspect they weren’t their parents‘ biological child.

The timid girl burst into tears, looking at me with eyes full of grievance.
She looked exactly like someone watching her rightful sister caring for someone else
instead.
I froze.
Aron and Jade’s argument continued.
His resentment toward Jade was
surprisingly intense. He pointed at her.
“You don’t know yet, do you, Jade? Your birth mother switched you and Joy when you were both newborns. You’re not a member of the Ryan family at all!”

I remembered my parents telling me the girl who came for recognition was named Joy Lancaster.
So this was her–the girl now standing in front of me.
I hadn’t expected Joy and Jade to attend the same university.
I lowered my eyes, thinking this through. What role was Aron playing in all this?
We were still at the police station. Lesley and the other officers were still here.
Most importantly, several of Jade’s friends from high society were also
present.
Initially, I hadn’t even planned to let Jade

know about this before the truth came out. Now so many people knew at once.
Jade still thought Aron was talking nonsense, but then he pointed directly at
- me.
“If you don’t believe me, ask your sister. Your parents couldn’t possibly keep something this big from her.”
Only then did Jade turn to look at me.
But she was my sister, after all. When our parents were busy during our childhood, she stayed with me, so she could read my expressions better than anyone.
“Jessie, is what he’s saying true?”
Just as Jade understood me, I understood

her too.

In those few short seconds, she must have
imagined countless scenarios. She was now studying my expression, trying to find the answer in it.
My brief silence seemed to confirm everything. Jade’s eyes reddened again. This time it wasn’t from anger. Her eyes held disbelief, sadness, and an absurd sense of life’s cruel unpredictability.
She looked so fragile.
I stared coldly at Aron. Before I could speak, Joy beside him spoke up again: “Jessie, do you only want her as your
sister?”
“Aron and I just met by chance. He helped

My parents keep a low profile–even I don’t always know their daily schedules. So I’d always wondered how she managed to find them.
Joy was filled with grievance and resentment. I could see her dissatisfaction with Jade–the hatred toward someone who had taken twenty years of her wealthy Christmas life. No matter how well she tried to hide this hatred, it inevitably showed through.
“I remember my parents scheduled a paternity test with you for tomorrow. Until the results come out, I have no reason to consider you my sister,” I said.

what Aron had said.

Jade’s expression was complex. Overwhelmed with mixed emotions, she
didn’t even know how to react at that
moment. Her friends watched the scene
with astonished looks.
“Aron, you’re meddling,” I stated the fact.
But Aron shouted angrily: “I originally thought you were just cold by nature, but I never imagined you’d be so heartless as to refuse to acknowledge your own sister. You only want a fake.”
My personality might indeed be cold. Toward this fiancé, I naturally couldn’t be as considerate as his past women. I wasn’t lucky enough to be born into a wealthy

family just to become some man’s devoted wife and mother.
Compared to the open and covert struggles among everyone in the Clayton family, only Jade and I could inherit the Ryan family business. From childhood, we were educated to master absolute authority.
“Aron,” I suddenly spoke up, “you don’t care about your own sister, so why are you concerned about mine?”
He was momentarily speechless. When he tried to say something more, I had already turned to Jade: “Jade, let’s go home.”
On the way back, I called Mom and Dad about today’s events and reminded them

Jade was like a wilted flower–no longer lively, silent like when her favorite middle school idol was exposed in a scandal.
Mom and Dad were both home. When they saw me bringing Jade back, they tried hard to pretend to care for Jade as they usually did, inviting her to dinner. But Jade was indeed much quieter and less talkative. My parents were really worried.
That evening, as I was preparing for bed, there was a knock at my bedroom door.
“Come in.”
The door opened, and my twenty–year–old sister stood outside holding her sleep companion doll. It was a small gift I’d
given her when I was a teenager, and TO/13
she’d been

Looking up at her, I felt as if I’d returned to her elementary school days. Back then, she would also run over holding her doll, asking to sleep with me.
“Jessie, can I sleep with you tonight?”
Even though we hadn’t slept together for several years, I still agreed. “Come in.”
A hint of joy flashed across Jade’s face. She quickly lay down on my bed. She didn’t say much, as if she simply came over to sleep with me.
I have a good memory, so I remember what she was like as a child. She’d always been chatty and cheerful, and when
sleeping with me, she’d ramble on about many things

before drifting off to sleep in confusion. But tonight she was very quiet.
However, she seemed unable to sleep either. After turning off the lights, though she didn’t move much, I knew she wasn’t this still when actually asleep.
After a long while, just as I was getting drowsy, I suddenly heard her call my name: “Jessie.”
“What’s wrong?”
“What if I’m really not Mom and Dad’s
child?”
“You are,” I said.
“I mean what if.”
