Chapter 6
By the time my parents burst in, they found me absolutely wrecking Mike.
Yeah, I’m a woman—but after everything I went through in my last life? I came back with baggage and a vengeance.
First thing I did after hitting reset? Signed up for self–defense. I’m not a superhero, but taking down one woman–beating loser? Please.
Mike was on the floor, moaning, begging me to stop. The more he begged, the harder I swung.
Back then, I’d cried, pleaded for him to stop. And he’d said?
“The more you cry, the more it turns me on.”
Cool. Let’s see if he’s still into it now.
New
rage stacked on old scars–I didn’t stop until I felt damn good.
His once–pretty face looked like it went ten rounds with a wrecking ball. Cecilia panicked and ran over with some ice.
“Demi! Are you insane? That’s your brother–in–law! Look at his face! You’ve been jealous of me since we were kids, and now I’m pregnant–why are you trying to destroy my family?”
Then she actually started crying, like she was the one who got ambushed.
Girl had a real gift for flipping the script. If she wasn’t pregnant, I’d have smacked the drama right out of her.
“You serious right now? If I wanted your husband, I would’ve picked him the first time. You can’t keep your dog on a leash, and now it’s MY fault? He came at me. I was generous not to bury him.”
But Cecilia wasn’t done. Since the bomb had already gone off, she figured–why not light the whole house on fire?
This was Spencer turf, and she thought she had home–court advantage.
She grabbed my sleeve.
anyway. So why not
“Everyone saw you throwing yourself at Mike. Your reputation’s trashed just move in as his lover? I’m your sister–can’t I make space for you? I’m pregnant, I can’t compete. I’m doing this for YOU.”
That’s when it hit me–this whole twisted setup was her plan from the start.
I knew she was nuts, but selling me out like this?

I staggered back, stunned, and instinctively grabbed my mom’s sleeve.
But she just looked at me and dropped her head, voice soft with fake guilt.
“Cecilia’s right. No matter how successful you are, you’re still a woman. You’ll have to marry someday. If it’s with Mike… at least I’ll know you’re safe.”
A chill shot down my spine. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Dad? Silent. Didn’t say a word–and that silence said everything.
So money really meant more than me? They’d sell me out just to stay afloat?
Mike leaned in, smug as hell.
“You heard them. Your whole family’s on board. Why fight it? Oh–and I bet no one told you your dad racked up a massive gambling debt overseas. Guess who paid it off?”
Now it all clicked.
Cecilia was scared Mike would cheat now that she was pregnant and ruin her little trophy wife fantasy. Toss in my parents‘ mountain of gambling debt, and boom–they figured offering me
would keep him in line.
up
Genius plan, really.
I looked around at this so–called “family” and felt like I’d stepped into a room full of
strangers.
Then again, in my last life, how did everything fall apart? Right–because my parents kept handing them matches while I burned.
My eyes narrowed.
I made the call.
