Chapter 11 They Need an Explanation
Noticing something off in Reece’s tone, Cristina quickly softened her voice. “Reece, I’m just thinking about the Diaz Group’s reputation. ‘Harvest‘ finally made a hit, and we can’t let it go to waste…”
Reece stood up, and the warmth in his eyes had gone. “The Diaz Group’s reputation doesn’t need your concern.”
It was the first time he had ever spoken to Cristina like that.
Cristina wanted to say more, but he stopped her.
“James, take Ms. Hurley home.”
“Reece…”
“Go home and have a good rest.”
Once Cristina left, Reece stared at all the “evidence” flooding his screen. He left the Diaz Building without a word.
“Mr. Diaz!” His assistant jogged after him. “The shareholder meeting’s about to start…”
With the company’s reputation under fire, the board needed an explanation from Reece.
He kept a straight face without any hesitation.
“Let them wait,” Reece said coldly.
He had something else to confirm first.
His Maybach sped through the streets, matching the fury in the driver’s chest.
Julissa had just cooked pasta when she heard Reece’s voice outside.
“Julissa, open up.”
His tone was as cold as always.
She knew she couldn’t avoid him, so she took a deep breath and opened the door.
“Mr. Diaz, you’re such an honored guest. What brings you here?”
Reece’s face was dark as if a storm was brewing in his eyes.
“You know why I’m here.”
She shrugged and said indifferently, “Let me guess. Do you want me to delete the posts, issue a public apology, and clear Cristina’s name? Mr. Diaz, you’re powerful in Archdale. Go on and show me how you plan to threaten me.”

He frowned. “You really think I’m that low?”
If Cristina messed up, the Diaz Group would take care of it.
He didn’t need to force anything out of Julissa.
But she snapped back, calm as ever, “Don’t you see me the same way? Just a lowly woman?”
Her tongue was getting sharper by the day.
“I only want to know one thing. What’s your connection to Caroline?”
The question caught Julissa off guard.
He came charging in like this, not for Cristina, but for that?
“I’ve got nothing to do with Caroline.”
Reece hated her indifference very much.
“Then how did you get her manuscript?”
“I found it on the street.”
“You!”

Before she could react, he grabbed her wrist and yanked her into a corner. His dark gaze approached. “Stay away from whoever gave you that thing.”
Julissa couldn’t understand what he meant.
She figured he was just being crazy again.
“You’ve hurt me!”
Reece usually had control, but lately, Julissa had completely thrown him off. He let go and reminded Julissa in a cold. voice, “Caroline isn’t what you think. If you get involved with her, you won’t even know how you die.”
His words stroke Julissa’s heart.
“What do you mean?” Julissa asked, “What do you know?”
Seeing her panic, Reece looked down. “What, didn’t Zayne tell you?”
She forced herself to calm down. She knew Reece. If he didn’t want to talk, no one could make him.
She gave up questioning him.
But she was sure that Reece knew something about her mother’s death.
She would find out the truth step by step.
“Fine. Keep your secrets.”

“Julissa.” Reece stared her down. “Do you think throwing yourself at the Fowler family is a good idea? When they throw you out, you won’t even know where to cry.”
He always thought that she willingly approached the Fowler family and tried to climb up.
“I never threw myself at the Fowler family. I’m not the pathetic woman you think I am.” Reece would never under- stand her pain. “Reece, you’re the one who kept pushing me away. I’m just a nobody. I had no choice. If you hadn’t pushed me again and again, would I be where I am now?”
Reece frowned. He looked at her but couldn’t get a word out. Something heavy pressed on his chest.
In the end, all he could say was, “Stay away from Zayne.”
Then he left.

Julissa watched him walk away. Her eyes slowly dimmed, and the bitter smile on her face never disappeared.
Once she collected herself, she picked up the phone and called Zayne.
“I’ve got an idea for the new design.”
The closer she got to the truth, the deeper she had to go.
There was no turning back now.
“I was waiting for you to say that.”
Reece worked late that night. By the time he got home, it was already past midnight. The huge villa was dead silent.
He used to like the quiet place. Now, it felt a bit too empty.
He never cared much for Julissa, but he had to admit that her cooking was good. After a long day, delicious food helped.
Now…
He looked at the empty dining table, rubbed his temples in frustration, and popped two sleeping pills.
“Please donate this money to others in need.”
“Honey, your body’s reacting to me.”
“Honey… Honey…”
He recalled her delicate face and teary but stubborn eyes. He missed the way she called him.
Reece jolted awake. The room was dark, and moonlight seeped in. It was just like that night in Julissa’s room.
He grabbed the blanket next to him. It was cold. No one had been there.

He couldn’t fall asleep. He got up to get some water, but somehow ended up in Julissa’s old room.
She hadn’t taken much with her. Everything was still there.
Reece narrowed her eyes.
Maybe she hadn’t planned on leaving forever and thought she’d come back someday.
She was just like that, never good at hiding how she felt.

She used to stand upstairs and secretly watch him eat when he got home late. Then she would rush back to her room when he finished.
No matter what, she could never really leave him.
When he thought of that, Reece’s mood lifted a little.
He made a call.
“James.”
James answered him in a groggy voice, “Mr. Diaz, what’s wrong? It’s so late…”
“Call Julissa. Ask her when she’s coming to get her stuff.”
He could imagine her trying not to cry when she came back to beg him.
