“Are you spending Christmas alone? Want to grab a drink together?” The man in front of the spaghetti restaurant held up a bottle of red wine he’d just bought, waving it at me.
I walked over to him. “Sure.”
His room had a similar layout to mine, but his had an additional balcony.
Snow was still falling outside. He and I each held a glass of red wine, leaning against the balcony railing in the cold wind.
I asked, “Are you here on vacation too?”
He shook his head. “No, I’m here looking for someone.”
I looked at him curiously. “A relative?”
He replied, “I’m looking for my wife.”
I asked in surprise, “Oh? You’re married? But it’s almost Christmas–you still haven’t found her?”
He said, “Actually, we had a fight, and she came here to travel.”
I lowered my voice. “I’m so sorry.”
He didn’t respond, but turned to me instead. “By the way, could

you tell me your name?”
I said, “Oh, I’m Amelia Crawford.”
He raised his wine glass. “I’m Gavin Harris.”

I smiled and clinked glasses with him. “Merry Christmas, Mr. Harris.”
The two of us drank quietly.
After a while, his phone rang.
I was about to step away when I heard a woman’s voice from the phone: “You’re in Stockholm? Where’s Ryan?”
Gavin smiled. “He should still be back home.”
The voice on the other end carried a hint of sadness. “He still
won’t come back?”
Gavin sighed. “Let’s give him a little more time.”
ging up, Gavin glanced at me. “Sorry, that was my

Gavin poured another glass of wine. “Years ago, my sister lived alone with my nephew in Malmö. Later she remarried and had a daughter, so my nephew went back home to study. All these years, I’ve been the one looking after him.”
He had to take care of a rebellious nephew and travel all this way to find his wife. It must be exhausting.
I turned to look at Gavin. “You must be under a lot of stress.”
Gavin looked back at me and smiled gently. “Not really.”
The intoxicating aroma of red wine seemed to melt the cold snowflakes.
Holding my slightly flushed face, I finally felt a touch of warmth on this Christmas Eve.
I watched his face getting closer to mine and smiled softly. “Mr. Harris, I’m feeling a bit unwell. Could I go back to my room
first?”
He said, “Of course.”
I set down my wine glass and left.
Back in my room, I splashed water on my face.
My heart was inexplicably restless, though I couldn’t explain why.

A voice in my head kept shouting–get out of here, get out of here, stay away from that man.
I took a deep breath and called the front desk directly, requesting to check out.
The staff member said, “Certainly, ma’am. We’ll come help you with your luggage right away.”
After hanging up, I walked to the window and looked out.
There were less than ten minutes left until the Christmas
countdown.
In the square outside, many young people had gathered to celebrate Christmas Eve.
I wondered if I could still find another hotel with available
rooms.
“Ding dong!”
Someone knocked on the door.
It must be the hotel staff coming to help with my luggage.
I immediately walked to the door and was about to apologize: “Sorry for troubling you so late…”

The door was only half open when a long leg suddenly wedged itself in.
My eyes widened in alarm. Realizing something was wrong, I quickly tried to close the door.
The next second, the door was pushed open by tremendous force.
The intruder grabbed my wrist directly, pinning me forcefully against the wall, then quickly closed the door behind him.
“Click“-he hit the switch.
The room was instantly plunged into darkness.
