Half an hour later, Gavin personally drove me to campus. His car drew countless stares as it circled around the school grounds. Finally, he skillfully parked in front of the academic building. I got out, puzzled by how familiar he seemed with the place—he hadn’t even used GPS.
“Thank you, Mr. Harris. You can head back now,” I said.
Gavin ignored my words, unbuckled his seatbelt, turned off the engine, and got out, casually lighting a cigarette. “It’s been a while since I’ve been here. I thought I’d visit an old friend while
I’m at it.”
I looked at him in confusion. “Old friend?”
Gavin suddenly put his arm around my shoulder. “Did you forget who introduced you to Ryan’s tutoring job?”
Half a month ago, Nash had indeed mentioned a part–time tutoring opportunity and asked if I was interested. Strapped for cash at the time, I’d agreed without hesitation.
Just as Gavin closed the car door, a familiar voice called out
from behind us. “Amelia!”
I turned to see several people walking toward me, including a tall guy who flashed me a bright smile in the morning light. It was Aaron Reid, my boyfriend of half a month.

I quickly pulled away from Gavin, stepping back to create distance. Aaron walked up to me and gave me a tight hug, planting a light kiss on my cheek.

“Where have you been? You haven’t been answering my messages. Did you finish revising your paper draft?” he asked.
Normally, such intimate gestures between couples would be perfectly natural, but knowing Gavin was watching us from
behind made me tense up. I quickly stepped back again. Aaron didn’t notice my deliberate distancing and handed me breakfast instead.
“For you–sandwich with egg and bacon. Coffee, no sugar.”
I’d only had milk for breakfast, so I gratefully accepted it. “Thank you.”
st as I was about to eat, a hand reached out from behind me, atched the bag away, and tossed it straight into a nearby trash
can.
“My sandwich!” I stared wide–eyed at Gavin in disbelief.
He said coldly, “You already had breakfast.”
Aaron frowned and stepped forward, grabbing Gavin by the collar. “What’s wrong with you?”

Gavin, who was a head taller than Aaron, looked at me calmly. “Amelia doesn’t eat other people’s food, right?”
I held my breath, unsure how to respond. Aäron laughed bitterly at his words. “Other people? Open your eyes and look clearly— I’m her boyfriend! Who are you to tell Amelia what to do?”
A cold smirk appeared on Gavin’s lips as he turned his gaze to Aaron. “Boyfriend? So you’re the one.”
Aaron looked bewildered and raised his hand to grab Gavin’s collar again. Remembering that Gavin still had leverage over me, I quickly intervened. “Aaron, he’s my boss. I just signed an internship contract with his company. Look, here’s the contract.”
Aaron looked up at Gavin. “What kind of boss just throws away other people’s food? What good could this company be? You should quit right now.”
With that, he took the contract from my hands, tore it up, crumpled it into a ball, and threw it in the trash can as well. Gavin’s expression grew increasingly dark, and I felt the air grow thick with tension.
Just then, a familiar voice spoke up. “Gavin? Aaron? What are you two doing here?”
Turning around, I saw a gray–haired older man pushing a bicycle toward us–it was my advisor, Nash. Gavin’s expression

softened slightly as he nodded to Nash. “Prof. Carter.”

Nash parked his bike by the classroom door. “Gavin, you rarely come back after graduation. What brings you here today? Are you thinking of returning to teach?”
Gavin replied, “I’m here to drop Amelia off for the seminar.”
Aaron’s face changed dramatically upon hearing this. He looked at me, then at Gavin. “You drove Amelia here?”
Nash looked at Aaron with confusion: “You didn’t know I recommended Amelia to tutor Gavin’s nephew?”
Aaron turned to question me: “Why didn’t you tell me?”
I rubbed my forehead and sighed: “It’s not a big deal.”
Gavin turned to Nash: “I haven’t been back in a while. I’d like to
sit in on this seminar too.”
Hearing this, Nash’s face lit up with delight: “That’s wonderful!”
As students gradually entered the classroom, a female student noticed Gavin beside Nash and immediately approached: “Professor Carter, who’s this handsome guy?”
Nash cleared his throat: “This is your senior, Gavin Harris. Several excerpts you’ve cited were published by him under the pen name Christmas in the weekly journal.” Nash paused, “Not

only that, but Gavin, writing as Christmas, is known as a ‘walking database.”
Students passing by stopped in their tracks upon hearing this. Someone whispered in awe: “A database!”
A male student immediately stepped forward: “Gavin, which class were you in?”
Gavin replied: “I’m six years ahead of you all.”
A female student asked curiously: “Could I get your contact
info?”
Gavin answered curtly: “No.”
Someone else asked: “Gavin, do you have a girlfriend?”
Gavin replied: “I’m married.”
I frowned. Didn’t Ryan say he was single? So he’s actually married–no wonder there were women’s items in his house. What a piece of work, lying even to his own nephew!
Seeing it was getting late, Nash urged everyone: “Stop crowding around here, let’s go in.”
The group finally surged toward the classroom. Aaron pulled me to sit on his side, while Gavin also pulled me toward the other side. In the end, I sat in the middle with one person on each

side, and the atmosphere immediately became tense.

During the seminar, Nash occasionally asked Gavin to speak. After listening for an hour, Gavin had gained a general understanding of our research topic. When he began his analysis, everyone’s attention focused on him. Only then did I finally understand why Nash hoped he would stay and take a position. Except for Aaron, all the surrounding classmates gazed at him with admiration.
I lowered my head and snorted coldly. Everyone was fooled by his serious facade. I really wanted to strip off that suit of his and let everyone see his true nature beneath that proper exterior.
