Chapter 15
With his arm still around Shirley, Jared surveyed Yvonne with a look of confidence. He stood there calmly as if it were completely justified for him to get entangled with two women at the same time.
Yvonne’s right arm was still numb. It hung limply on the side, hidden beneath the sleeve of her silk blouse.
With her expression calm as ever, she met his self–assured gaze and used her left hand to hold the document out to him.
“I need your signature on this,” she said.
Her words made Jared frown in anger.
“Do you mean to say that all the times you asked to see me, and even your attempt to keep me here now, were all for the sake of this document?”
So, it wasn’t because she was jealous? She wasn’t demanding his attention in an attempt to win him back?
“That’s right. This is an important document,” Yvonne said as she stepped closer and explained earnestly. “I’m in charge of the jewelry exhibition. Naturally, it’s what I care about the most.”
Shirley was still acting as though she was about to faint at any second now. Jared was concerned about her condition, but he was even more displeased by Yvonne’s attitude.
“I don’t have the time to check that document of yours, Yvonne! Shirley’s injured. She needs to be taken to the hospital for a tetanus shot as soon as possible, yet here you are, wasting my time. Can’t you see what’s more important? What if her wound gets infected? I’ll have to live with the guilt for the rest of my life!”
Obviously, Yvonne could tell that Shirley was faking it.
“Ms. Ember is probably fine, but the document is urgent. It won’t take up too much of your time. Kindly sign it now so that the projects department can continue with our work.”
“Yvonne! Are you saying that your work is the most important thing?” Jared fumed.
“Are you picking on Shirley on purpose? Didn’t I give you a chance? It’s not like you’re injured, so why are you upset that I chose to save Shirley first? How much longer are you going to keep up with this nonsensical jealousy of yours?”
“I’m discussing a work matter with you, Mr. Ford,” Yvonne piped up to cut off Jared’s interrogation.
The maintenance workers were still fixing the elevator. All eyes were on them, but Yvonne remained calm.
But that only infuriated Jared further. He was angered by the fact that Yvonne showed no sign of needing him at all. Compared to that, he felt much more pleased with Shirley’s pleading cries and dependence on him.
Fueled by his emotions, Jared blew up at Yvonne.
“I don’t need you to tell me what to do! This is my company. You’re just an employee who works for the projects department. I’m the one who decides whether a document is important or not. That document of yours is useless if I decide to cancel the jewelry exhibition!”
Naturally, he felt more inclined to side with the woman who needed him more.
Yvonne’s eyes widened in shock, and her body stiffened as she retorted, “If you intend to make such decisions on a whim, Mr. Ford, I will have to object during tomorrow’s meeting.
“The jewelry exhibition has been progressing smoothly. There’s no valid reason to cancel it. Even though you’re the company president, you still have to answer to
the shareholders.”
She wasn’t going to let all the effort she’d put into planning the jewelry exhibition go to waste just like that. The entire team had poured their hearts and souls into
- it.
Upon hearing what she said, Jared fixed his baleful glare on her and questioned, “How dare you threaten me?”
“I’m just reminding you to keep personal and professional matters separate.” Holding the document out to Jared, Yvonne firmly declared, “If you don’t sign this document now, Mr. Ford, I’ll just have to get one of the other shareholders to do it instead.”
Jared scoffed in fury. Never would he have expected Yvonne, the one who’d accompanied him all these years, to defy him like this.
Why was she insisting on humiliating him in front of everyone?
“Mr. Ford, Yvonne, please don’t argue because of me,” Shirley chimed in tearfully as she made a show of being thoughtful. “I’m fine. It’s just a little scratch. You should sign the document Yvonne needs, Mr. Ford.”
The atmosphere was tense. Jared grabbed the document and skinumed through it before shooting Yvonne an icy glare.
‘What a selfish woman you are. Looks like I was wrong about you all along,”
He signed the document and tossed it at Yvonne before scooping Shirley up in his arms. “Don’t worry, Shirley,” he assured gently. “I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Yvonne was the one who pushed him into the arms of another woman. She was going to regret that!
In reality, Yvonne didn’t care at all.
