Yvonne took the bowl. She couldn’t smell anything with her nose congested, but she could feel the warmth of the soup.
“Thank you,” she said softly.
The doctor sat there, carefully examining her.
Meanwhile, Samuel sat across from her. His expression was somewhat conflicted as he said, “Ms. Jamison, I know you’re not feeling well right now, and maybe this isn’t the best time to bring up”
Yvonne looked up at him, pizzled.
“The gifts I present my grandfather during his birthdays always draw a lot of attention. So the emerald sculpture is especially important to me. I need you to be at your best for it.”
Samuel’s words of concern came with a subtle reminder.
Yvonne had been overthinking, but hearing him pressure her as a clent made her breathe a sigh of relief.
“This sculpture is important to me too, Mr. Hover. Don’t worry, I won’t stay sick for long.”
“Glad to hear it. Enjoy the soup, Ms. Jamison.”
Samuel’s tension eased, though a flicker of emotion still passed through his eyes.
Thankfully, he’d already thought of an explanation on his way here Earlier, he’d lost his composure and ended up sending the voice message. He figured Yvonne had probably only agreed to let him bring a doctor out of politeness.
He’d pushed her too much, and that was never how he wanted to approach things between them.
Yvonne hadn’t eaten all day, so she managed to finish more than half the bowl of soup.
“It’s really good. Thank you.”
When the doctor finished the checkup, he handed her two strips of cold medicine.
“You’re having a regular cold, Ms. Jamison. You’ve got a mild fever but no inflammation. Make sure to drink lots of water and finish the medication. You should be fine in a couple of days.”
Samuel poured her a glass of water and watched as she took her medicine
When Yvonne stood up, she swayed slightly as a bout of dizziness hit her.
Samuel reacted quickly, catching her by the arm. Her body leaned against him for a second before she steadied herself. Her cheeks were flushed with fever, and her skin was warm to the touch. For a moment, something stirred deeply in him.
“Ms. Jamison, make sure to rest after taking the medicine.”
“I will. Thank you, Mr. Hover.” She gave him a polite nod.
The medicine made her drowsy again, and soon she drifted back to sleep.
By the time Yvonne woke up again, it was already late afternoon. She groggily opened her eyes and saw Isabel sitting by the bed, playing with her phone.
“Babe, you’re finally awake. Are you feeling any better? I saw the medicine on your desk. Did you go to the hospital by yourself?” “It was Mr. Hover. He brought a doctor with him. I took the medicise after the checkup”
After a good nap, Yvonne felt significantly better.

“Right, right. He has terrible taste.”
Given how close the Hover and Gill families were, Yvonne really hoped to keep future interactions minimal to avoid unnecessary awkwardness.

Isabel pounced at her and lifted her chin dramatically. “I want you to come with me to college and flirt with some cute guys!”
